To create a Mediterranean Risk Map of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage

An extraordinary historic, cultural and environmental heritage characterizes, with its widespread presence, the territories of all Mediterranean Countries and testifies a common identity. Therefore it is possible and desirable to create around this heritage a common knowledge and a shared model of economic and social development. In this case it is absolutely necessary to create research network applied to cultural heritage and to characterize shared tools to guarantee efficacious conservation and management of this heritage.
In Italy the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro built, in 1980 about, the model of the Risk Map, that replies to this demand for a correct management of cultural and environmental heritage. Twenty years after the Italian-Greek project Archimed – Central and Eastern Mediterranean – Risk Map of cultural heritage and mapping and description of cultural landscape, with the sharing of Sicilian Region, was started.
The project suggested and positively tested a new model of management of the knowledge about heritage. That identifies the regional scale as the standard observation of the heritage and the region as leading actor of a joint project, urged to build regional Risk Maps.

Sicily, in particular, began, and finished in large part, the carrying out of its project. The Risk Map, particularly, characterizes the presence and territorial diffusion of historic, cultural and environmental heritage and values its vulnerability. Furthermore, the Risk Map observes, describes and values dangerous levels present in the territory and pertinent to static-structural, ambient-air and anthropic aspects. All this allows to value risk indexes pertinent to this heritage and provides suggestions about correct management of the territory that guarantees the conservation of own cultural testimonies.
The project that the Sicilian Region presents here aims at suggesting the activation, at the same time in all Mediterranean Regions, of the Risk Map. All this with the hope to inspire the Regions involved to co-operate for a common construction of efficacious methodologies of knowledge and fruition of heritage. The project forecast, in fact, the carrying out of positive experiences about the research applied to the conservation of heritage, about the construction of common data banks and about the characterization of shared criteria to efficacious management of territories.
The idea of a Mediterranean Risk Map has been launched by the CENTRO REGIONALE PER LA PROGETTAZIONE ED IL RESTAURO of Palermo within the scope of the coordinated research activities which have been carried out by HERIMED association. You might download here the research paper named "Building a Risk Map of the Mediterranean Cultural and Environmental Heritage".
